Calgary criminal escorted to scene of alleged crime as trial continues

CALGARY – Hundreds of Calgarians were witness to a dramatic scene on Sunday night, watching police officers escort a convicted criminal on a tour through the city’s northeast and southeast.

With his hands cuffed and feet shackled, diagnosed psychopath Gregory Venn was taken out of the Calgary Remand Centre to tour the scene of a crime he is now accused of.

Venn is a repeat sex offender, convicted of breaking into the homes of his victims and sexually assaulting them.

He is currently before the courts, accused of following a woman as she walked home from The Border Crossing pub on 36th Street S.E., last May.

The defence is questioning the path the accused and the victim walked that night, and view both would have had of each other.

Venn wore an orange prison jumpsuit as he retraced his steps. He was joined by the judge in the case, the Crown, the defence and several sheriffs.

He is charged with criminal harassment and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

This trial is significant because if convicted, it could be the case that takes Venn’s freedom away for good – if the Crown makes a dangerous offender application.

The case will now move back into the courtroom in the coming days for the remainder of the trial.
