Edmonton foster mom found guilty of manslaughter in three-year-old boy’s death

EDMONTON – A former foster mother in Edmonton has been found guilty of manslaughter.

A Court of Queen’s Bench judge ruled Wednesday that Lily Choy, who is 37, was responsible for the death of a three-year-old boy in her care in 2007.

The boy hit his head and died from a brain injury.

The defence argued the child was aggressive and displayed harmful behaviour, but the Crown said Choy subjected him to extreme punishment.

It’s the second time Choy was convicted of the charge – the first was in 2008, but the Alberta Court of Appeal ordered a retrial on a charge of second-degree murder.

Sentencing will take place on Oct. 17.
