Severe thunderstorms soak Toronto

WATCH ABOVE:  While the thunder and lightning show may have sounded and looked spectacular, as Cindy Pom shows us,  it inconvenienced plenty of you and proved dangerous to others.

TORONTO – A series of heavy thunderstorms rolled through the Greater Toronto Area Friday night.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning just after 8 p.m. Friday as storms rolled in across southern Ontario, before ending the warning around 10 p.m.

WATCH ABOVE: Global’s harbour camera captured this timelapse footage of the massive storm front bringing an “early dusk” to Toronto.

Toronto was hit with heavy rain, lightning flashes, and booming thunder. Thunderstorms also caused technical difficulties at the Stand Up To Cancer telecast that prevented Ben Stiller from appearing on the special broadcast.

Much of southern Ontario was covered by various warnings and watches Friday. A first-year student at the University of Waterloo died after she was struck by lightning around 9 a.m.
