OTTAWA – Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was 4.2 per cent in August, up one percentage point from July but still the lowest in the country for the twentieth straight month.
According to figures released by Statistics Canada on Friday, 566,700 people were employed in the province during the month, up by 200 from July and 8,100 from a year ago.
Last month’s job gains were split evenly between full-time and part-time employment.
The reason for the spike in the unemployment rate was the number of people in the labour force. In July, there were 585,300 people in the workforce, which increased by 1.0 per cent by 6,100 people to 591,400 last month.
That showed up in the number of unemployed, with 24,700 people looking for work in August, up 5,900 from the previous month.
Nationally, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.0 per cent.
