One person killed in Taradale crash, baby taken to hospital

CALGARY – One man was killed in a car crash in the community of Taradale on Friday, which also sent an infant to hospital.

It happened around 8:40 a.m. in the 200 block of Taralake Terrace N.E.

Police say the victim was driving his vehicle when he struck a parked minivan, causing his car to roll onto its roof and slide for about 16 metres.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS transported a two-month-old baby boy from the same car to the Children’s Hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

Investigators don’t believe the child’s car seat was strapped in at the time of the collision.

“The seat did its job and the child is unharmed at this point,” says Calgary Police Acting Staff Sgt. Dean Vegso.

He adds that the crash was quite unusual.

“For a vehicle to veer off to the left and hit a parked car, and for the amount of damage that happened, it certainly is a strange accident scene. Especially for this type of a neighborhood.”

Police say speed may have been a factor in the collision, and are trying to determine if distracted driving may have been involved.
