TORONTO — Stars are coming out Friday night for the annual Stand Up To Cancer telethon, which will air on Global and the other major Canadian and U.S. TV networks.
The hour-long special will include a live segment from Toronto, where stars like Ben Stiller, Rufus Wainwright, Tatiana Maslany and Jason Priestley are gathering at a downtown event space.
Stand Up To Cancer will also feature appearances and performances by dozens of Hollywood stars.
Funds raised during the broadcast from Canadian viewers will go to the creation of collaborative research teams, as well as education and awareness programs conducted in Canada.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, striking two out of every five people.
“As broadcasters, we have a responsibility to use the power of television to effect change so we jumped at the opportunity to come together with our colleagues for this incredibly worthy cause,” said Phil Piazza, Global’s vice-president of content acquisitions and Global TV programming, in July.
“This dynamic hour of television is an important step in the fight to beat a disease that has touched so many Canadians.”
Stand Up To Cancer was founded by the U.S.-based Entertainment Industry Foundation. It has raised hundreds of millions of dollars since it debuted in 2008.
The special will air at 8pm ET on Global, City, CTV and CBC.
