TORONTO – Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio was in Alberta doing research on the oilsands for an environmental documentary last week.
On Friday, the actor took part in the ice bucket challenge, which has people pouring buckets of icy water over their heads to raise awareness and money for ALS research.
Once you complete the challenge the idea is to donate money and nominate someone else to do it as well. DiCaprio nominated Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
A video of the challenge, which DiCaprio did along with Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Chief Steve Courtoreille of the Mikisew Cree First Nation and Michael Brune, president of The Sierra Club, was posted to DiCaprio’s Facebook page Monday.
Chief Adam nominated Dave Collyer, president of Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Chief Courtoreille nominated Mark Little of Suncor Canada, and Brune nominated Shell CEO Ben van Beurden.
DiCaprio also gave a donation from his foundation.

Harper’s press secretary says the prime minister had already been challenged by others last week to either dump a bucket of ice water over his head or make a donation, and he’s made a donation to ALS Canada.
ALS Canada has raised over $5 million since the challenge started spreading online earlier this summer. The ALS Association in the U.S. has raised close to US$80 million.
ALS is a non-contagious disease that affects approximately 3,000 Canadians. ALS Canada says two out of 100,000 people aged 18 and older are diagnosed each year.
