CALGARY- A Calgary man is horrified that a woman’s cries for help went virtually unnoticed, after she was drugged at a Calgary bar.
Kris Labelle was inside his home just off 14 Street S.W. in the early hours of Sunday morning, when he heard screaming.
“The screams became very loud, very distressed, very alarming. After five minutes, I knew there was a situation,” Labelle remembers. “Then we heard ‘somebody please help me.’”
He ran outside to find a young woman losing consciousness.
“It was traumatizing. She screamed she was dying, she was barely breathing.
“It crossed my mind, what if she died in front of my eyes? What would I do?”
As her condition deteriorated, it became clear that she’d been drugged. But just as disturbing was the fact that only one other person came out to help.
“It is surprising,” says Jordan Tilstra, who called 911. “She screamed for 15 minutes before I looked out. At first it sounded like mumbling, then it turned into panic and a massive scream for help.”
EMS rushed to the scene, and took the woman to hospital. It’s believed she was drinking at 1410 World Bier Haus that evening, and bar staff are committed to finding out what happened.
“I can go through the cameras and hope we find the person or what happened, and do our own investigating to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” says manager Jaime Mansour. “This probably happens more times than gets reported.”
The woman is expected to make a full recovery.
