Thief tries to hide stolen electronics in his kilt

ABOVE: How did the alleged thief pull off his “kilt caper” and smuggle stolen electronic items inside his kilt?

An Oregon man has been accused of boosting multiple items from an electronics store – by smuggling them inside his kilt.

And while the traditional Scottish garb may be enjoying a resurgence, few would ever think to use one as an aid to theft.

But that’s exactly what one brazen Portland man now stands accused of, having allegedly smuggled items like a computer mouse, a car charger, and even a remote controlled helicopter inside the roomy confines of his man-skirt (there’s something you wouldn’t want accidentally turning on inside your kilt).

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Daniel Ducret, 37, walked into Fry’s Electronics in Wilsonville, Oregon on Wednesday wearing his kilt.

According to loss prevention staff at the store, Ducret could be seen stuffing items into a pouch in his kilt.

When he returned to the store again the follow day, police were alerted and another “kilt caper” was prevented.

So how exactly did Ducret allegedly make off with bulk electronics wearing a garment not exactly known for its storage space?

According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Ducret’s kilt had been specially modified with various pouches and pockets, allowing him to carry a much greater load.

Ducret’s choice of bottom wear was likely also his undoing. While a store attendant may be hesitant to conduct a search on a kilt-wearing customer (according to Scottish custom, the kilt is usually worn sans-underwear), a man wearing an oversized kilt brimming with secret pockets and pouches isn’t exactly doing much to blend into the crowd.

“I don’t think there’s a graceful way to stick stuff inside a kilt,” Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputy Dan Kraus told KOIN News in Portland.

Here’s hoping thieves don’t figure out how to add any secret compartments to Lederhosen.
