REGINA – From runs, to weddings, to sports championships, it’s been a busy decade for Wascana Centre. So much so, the number of events being hosted at the park have nearly doubled within that time.
“It’s wonderful. That’s why we exist. Our tagline is to be a place for you. And that is for the people of Saskatchewan, and all the tourists that come to join,” said the non-profit’s CEO Bernadette McIntyre.
Before ‘The Big Dig’ in 2004, Wascana Centre hosted about 1,200 events each year; that number has jumped to 2,300 today.
This week, the Canadian Spring CanoeKayak Championships took over Wascana Lake for the third time since 2006.
“What makes this venue really unique is just the big park feel to it, you’ve got lots of open space but, at the same time, you’ve got the show centered right on the island,” said Ian Miller, a spokesperson for the vent.
