Weather affects Whoop Up Days numbers

LETHBRIDGE- Summer is the time of year Bob Hauser looks forward to most.

The West Coast Amusements owner travels to fairs across the country. However,  rainy weather during Whoop Up Days in Lethbridge has put a damper on his business.

“We’ve been here approximately 25 plus years. I’ve never seen us get consistently bad weather every day,” he said.

Both organizers and vendors say in terms of weather and attendance, this could possibly be one of the worst weeks in Whoop Up Days history.

“This is the first year we had consistent rain throughout the week,” said organizer Doug Kryzanowski.

Attendance numbers have not yet been released, but it’s obvious numbers are low when walking the fair grounds.

“We’re down. If the weather isn’t cooperating then attendances are down because people don’t want to go out in it.”

Hauser is hoping for sunnier skies on Saturday, but feels the damage has already been done.

“We budget for a few days of bad weather. Not an entire fair. To get washed out like that it sure affects everybody. The spirit. The economical impact. It’s tough on everybody.”

Rides will continue to run as normal and the rodeo is still going on as planned until the fair ends on Saturday.
