WINNIPEG – A man has been arrested and charged with attempting to lure a child away from Central Park with promises of candy and cash.

A 23-year-old man was arrested Tuesday, police said.

A man approached a five-year-old boy at the splash pad in Winnipeg’s downtown Central Park just after noon on Sunday and tried to get the child to leave with him, police said. The boy was offered candy and money by the man, who was carrying a Thomas the train backpack, police said.

A lifeguard intervened and the man left. The child wasn’t injured.

Tyrone Abdul Tijani-Mazur of Winnipeg is charged with:

  • abducting a person under 14;
  • possessing cannabis resin;
  • failing to comply with a probation order; and
  • failing to comply with a condition of an undertaking.

Tijani-Mazur is being held in custody.
