SASKATOON – A bylaw amendment could make transporting dogs in the back of pickup trucks illegal in Saskatoon.
A recommendation by the animal control advisory committee was approved Monday by the city’s council committee.
Under the recommendations, dogs will be allowed in the back of pickup trucks only if they are properly secured in a kennel or appropriate harness system.
The amendment will be prepared by city solicitors and sent back to city council for final approval.
There will be an amnesty period of six months will be in place before tickets will be issued. During this time, drivers transporting dogs will be educated about safety measures.
Once the bylaw is in full force, drivers could face a fine of $100 for a first offence and $200 for each subsequent offence.
