KELOWNA — Rutland Centennial Park will remain in the hands of The Rutland Park Society after the group voted against selling it to the City of Kelowna.
The vote took place Thursday night during a Rutland Park Society general meeting.
Sixty-eight per cent of the members voted in favor of the sale, however, 75 per cent was needed for the deal to go through.
“We are disappointed that not all of the society members shared the same vision or understand the value in working together for improving the historic Rutland Centennial Hall, the park and access to the Town centre,” says Mayor Walter Gray.
Last December, the Rutland society signed a Memorandum of Understanding, allowing the City to acquire a road-right-of-way with the purchase of the park. In addition, $800,000 would be reinvested into updating the Rutland Centennial Hall to meet current building code requirements. Additionally, $400,000 would be put toward the park.
“This was a good solution as it provided a partnership model by breathing new life into these aging amenities so they could be better utilized by residents now and into the future,” says Gray.
However, the City is continuing to explore the options for the Shepherd Road extension to Rutland Road. The goal is to improve pedestrian access and the esthetics of the area.
