Man tried to help someone in river, lands in hospital

WINNIPEG – A man is in hospital after trying to help someone struggling in the river.

Splash Dash Tours confirms one of its water taxi captains was trying to pull someone on to his boat when he suffered an apparent heart attack.

The captain was taken to hospital where he is recovering.

It all happened around 2:00 p.m. Friday. An off duty police officer was near the Provencher Bridge when he spotted a man in the river who appeared to be in distress.

The officer then waived down the water taxi to try and help.

Police and fire crews scoured the Red River for well over an hour trying to find someone but were unsuccessful.

The police dive unit has since been called in.
