Apartment building evacuated over fears of collapse

MONTREAL – Several residents were evacuated from their apartments Thursday morning because of fears a building would collapse.

Firefighters arrived at the building on Cartier St. from Ontario to Sherbrooke after a loud crack was heard at around 5:30 a.m.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Bricklayers were working on the building when fissures suddenly formed outside the structure running all the way up to the roof.

Firefighters suspect recent construction work through the tunnel was done incorrectly.

Engineers are on the scene investigating the cause and trying to find ways of stabilizing the building

Meanwhile, the Red Cross is providing shelter for the six families who are unable to return home until the building is safe again.
