UPDATE: 6:10 p.m. – The severe thunderstorm watch has now ended.

People in many parts of B.C.’s Interior, Columbia and Kootenay regions are on severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon and evening.

Areas affected are:

-100 Mile

-Arrow Lakes – Slocan Lake

-Boundary

-Fraser Canyon

-Nicola

-North Columbia

-North Thompson

-Okanagan Valley

-Shuswap

-Similkameen

-South Thompson

-West Columbia

-West Kootenay

Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Residents are being warned large hail can damage property and cause injury.

In case of severe weather, they are being asked to take cover immediately and stay indoors.

“We have a very unstable airmass over our region today,” says Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon. “Thunderstorms are expected across much of the Interior this afternoon. These will generally be travelling from south to north and have the potential of becoming severe.”
