Supply ship docks with International Space Station

TORONTO – The European Space Agency‘s final Automated Transfer Vehicle docked with the International Space Station early Tuesday morning delivering needed supplies to astronauts aboard the orbiting laboratory.

The fifth and final cargo ship – named after the 20th century Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaître – automatically docked with the station’s Russian module, Zvezda. Aboard are nearly seven tons of science, food, fuel and supplies for the astronauts.

Just as the ATV-5 begins its stay, another cargo ship is preparing to launch.

The Cygnus commercial cargo ship from Orbital Sciences is preparing for its departure from the ISS’s Harmony module. It is scheduled to leave Friday at 6:40 a.m. ET after having been at the ISS for one month. The astronauts will use the Canadarm2 to release it.

The ATV-5 launched from French Guiana on July 29. It is scheduled to depart in January 2015 where it will then burn up over the Pacific Ocean.
