TORONTO – An 8-year-old girl and a 38-year-old man are both dead after an alleged domestic dispute in Thunder Bay.

Police officers responded to an apartment building on the 400 block of Donald Street West in Thunder Bay shortly before 3 a.m. Monday morning where a woman had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, according to the police department.

When they arrived they found the woman’s daughter was critically injured. She was transported to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The girl’s mother had non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The suspect male had fled but police later received a call about a suspicious male approximately eight kilometres away from Donald Street W. on Wharton Road.

Thunder Bay police, working alongside the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP),  contained the area and tried to communicate with the man.

The man was eventually arrested after a four-hour standoff and was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Several loud bands were heard prior to the man’s arrest, according to a report on TBNewsWatch.com.

Police say he had injuries that “appeared to have been sustained prior to his arrest.”

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) – an arm’s length agency that investigates when people die while in police custody – is investigating the incident.
