WATCH: Lightning strikes throughout Edmonton
EDMONTON – Lightning strikes filled the skies over Edmonton and surrounding areas Wednesday night, creating quite the light show, particularly for some downtown residents.
One Edmontonian, who lives on the 18th floor of a building in the area of 101 Avenue and 104 Street, captured video of lightning starting a fire northwest of his building.
The summer storm crossed through the Capital Region, bringing with it lots of lightning and some small hail. According to Global Meteorologist Richard Ozero, the worst of the storm had passed by about 9:30 p.m.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to repair at least three downed power lines along 129 Avenue, between 112 and 118 Streets.
EFRS spokesperson Laura Ruddock says between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night, fire crews received 36 weather-related calls, including 12 for reported lightning strikes.
