REGINA – Heavy rain, strong wind and hail have hit a number of communities across southern and central Saskatchewan.

There were also reports of funnel clouds west of Saskatoon during the storm on Thursday evening.

Power went out in a number of communities including Regina, where the downtown and several neighbourhoods were affected.

Sask Power communications people weren’t available Thursday evening, but confirmed on Twitter that there were outages.

Underpasses in Regina quickly filled with water, but remained navigable.

The storm moved up from the southwest.

In Ponteix, Anne Perrault at Splitters Cafe said it was brief but furious.

“Lots of wind, pea-sized hail, the hail lasted maybe five minutes,” she said.

Not far away in Cadillac, south of Swift Current, Cindy Lalonde at the Range Land Tavern told a similar story.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It was actually pretty big but it didn’t last very long. Like, five minutes of torrential downpour, black skies, lightning thunder and big winds.”

Lalonde described the hail as about the size of a nickel.
