What you need to know about GlobalNews.ca’s new commenting system
TORONTO – A number of you emailed us asking why we were not allowing commenting on our stories. We turned it off because our old commenting platform for Global News was hosted by a third-party vendor in the United States and was not in full compliance with Canada’s new anti-spam laws, which came into effect on July 1st.
The good news is we have switched from our previous provider, Disqus, and have now implemented Facebook’s commenting system.
What does this mean for you?
This means that instead of having to login to another service to comment on an article on GlobalNews.ca, you will instead use your Facebook account and profile. If you are already signed into Facebook when you visit our site, you will automatically be able to comment.
Below is a list of frequently asked questions related to the new commenting system.
1. Why are you using Facebook for comments?
Most people are already familiar with Facebook as a robust social platform for thoughtful discussion and debate, which we hope to foster with our engaging content. Facebook commenting also allows you to easily share our stories with your friends.
2. Do I need to be a Facebook subscriber?
Yes, you need to be signed into your Facebook account before you can leave a comment. Your Facebook name will appear on the comment field once you leave a comment.
3. What if I don’t have a Facebook account?
You need to create a Facebook account. It’s free and simple to sign-up at facebook.com.
4. Will my friends see my comments?
Yes, providing you leave the check in the box “Post my comments to my Facebook profile” under your Facebook settings.
5. Is there a subscribe option to this commenting?
There is no option to subscribe. A user commenting on any thread on Facebook automatically gets notification to that thread. You can set notification preferences under the settings area of your Facebook account.
6. Do you collect users email addresses?
No, we don’t collect or hold the users email addresses nor do we send the emails. Everything is done by Facebook. This implementation is just like the “share” or “like” buttons we have for Facebook.
7. Will people be able to view my Facebook profile if I post a comment?
Depends on your Facebook privacy settings that are determined by you. You can adjust these within your account by going to Settings and then clicking on Privacy.
8. How do I report abusive comments?
Click on the “x” in the top right corner of an abusive comment and it will be marked as spam and hidden from your view.
