VERNON – RCMP are investigating a longboarding accident that claimed the life of a Vernon teenager.
Police say it was shortly after 11p.m. on Sunday night when the teen was struck by a vehicle in the area of 39th Street and Okanagan Avenue.
Police say so far the investigation indicates that the victim was riding his longboard when he failed to stop at a stop sign.
Police say it was dark at the time and the driver of the vehicle involved did not see him until it was too late.
The BC ambulance service and the Vernon Fire Department responded to the accident and provided CPR, however the young man succumbed to his injuries later at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
The vehicle involved has been towed for a mechanical inspection.
Traffic reconstructionists and the Coroners Service are both investigating.
The young man was not carrying any identification so police are still working to identify him.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this case.
RCMP are appealing for any witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate.
