ACAPULCO, Mexico – Officials say 12 criminal suspects and one police officer have died in two days of running gun battles in a southern Mexico town.

The mayor of Chilapa in Guerrero state told residents to remain in their homes because of shooting between gunmen and police raging on the town’s streets.

Mayor Francisco Garcia Gonzalez discouraged residents from going out at night in the mountain town, located in an area where drug gangs are battling for turf.

State prosecutors said Thursday that a downtown gunfight the previous night left six gunmen and one state police officer dead, and four officers wounded. The gunmen apparently attacked a police station.

On Tuesday, five gunmen and one woman died in another gun battle in the town.
