Alberta-shot ‘Fargo’, several Canadians earn Emmy nominations

TORONTO — Made-in-Alberta Fargo scored an Emmy nomination Thursday for Outstanding Miniseries and earned Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton nods for Lead Actor in a Drama.

A number of Canadians who worked on the show were nominated, including Matthew J. Lloyd (cinematography), Jackie Lind (casting), Bridget Durnford (editing), and Frank Laratta and Mike Playfair (sound).

In all, Fargo got 18 nominations, beaten only by Game of Thrones with 19.

Other top nominated shows include American Horror Story: Coven with 17 and Breaking Bad and The Normal Heart with 16 each.

Canada’s Degrassi was nominated for Outstanding Children’s Program. The long-running series is filmed in Toronto.

Vice, hosted and executive produced by Ottawa’s Shane Smith, is up for Outstanding Informational Series or Special.

Nominees in the Unstructured Reality Program category include Wild Things from Toronto’s Cream productions.

Maurice LaMarche, a two-time Emmy-winning voice actor from Toronto, was nominated for his work on the animated series Futurama.

Montreal native Barry Julien is part of The Colbert Report writing team vying for an Emmy.

In the Outstanding Sound Editing category, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia native Paula Fairfield was nominated for her work on Game of Thrones.

Moira Walley-Beckett, who grew up in Vancouver, got a nod for writing an episode of Breaking Bad.

Toronto’s Mr. X Inc. was nominated in the Special and Visual Effects in a Supporting Role category for its work on the Canadian co-production Vikings.

Several shows that air on Global were recognized. Julianna Margulies was nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama for her work on The Good Wife. Also up for Emmys this year are Saturday Night Live and Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.

Food Network series Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is in the running for Outstanding Structured Reality Program.

Multiple nominations were also announced for Orange is the New Black, Veep, House of Cards and True Detective.
