The Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region is buying new medical equipment to help shorten surgical wait times.
The Regina Hospital Foundation, along with Potash Corp, raised $2.5 million in its recent campaign, and the money will go towards new surgery equipment.
Pat Fiacco, president and CEO of the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, says there were more than 26,000 surgeries in the region last year.
The region will buy 37 new pieces of equipment including a new microscope for reconstructive plastic surgery, as well as equipment for less-invasive keyhole surgeries and a specialized ultrasound for kidney operations.
Ear, nose and throat doctors will have a new electromagnetic navigation system that produces 2D and 3D imaging.
Dr. David McCutcheon, vice-president of physician and integrated health services for the region, says the new equipment will replace aging equipment and help with operating room scheduling.
