SASKATOON – Saskatchewan’s traffic safety spotlight this month could mean harsh consequences for heavy-footed motorists.
The July initiative has police across the province on the lookout for speeders.
According to Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), there are an average of over 2,500 speed-related collisions and 46 deaths annually on provincial roads.
“During the summer months, with increased traffic on our roads and highways, speeding is simply not worth the risk. Plan ahead. Build in more travel time,” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.
“Slow down and obey posted speed limits to keep yourself and other road users safe.”
New traffic laws came into effect last month in Saskatchewan.
A new offence was introduced for driving double the speed limit. The fine starts at $140, plus four dollars for each km/h in excess.
Also, exceeding the speed limit by over 50 km/h can result in vehicle impoundment for a week.
The province is expected to launch a photo radar pilot project in August at high-risk locations and school zones in Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw.
