Prince George Fire Centre crews say they have responded to 20 new fires in the past 48 hours, with 15 of those being caused by lightning.
Four of the remaining five are undetermined, but one was caused by an abandoned campfire.
Of the 15 caused by lightning, one of the largest is 60 kilometres northeast of Prince George and is about three hectares in size. Helicopters have been bucketing water onto the fire and two initial attack crews are on scene.
Another fire, south of Stuart Lake, is smaller, but airtankers are being used along with helicopters, to bucket water onto the flames.
Crews say over the Canada Day weekend there were 15 abandoned campfires. They want to remind people to completely extinguish a fire before leaving the area for any length of time.
The fire danger rating is currently ‘moderate’ to ‘high’ throughout the Prince George Fire Centre, with a few areas rated ‘extreme’, which are near Vanderhoof, Fort St. John and northeast of Fort Nelson.
