UPDATE: Man killed in Macleod Trail crash

Calgary – A 25-year-old man has died after an early morning crash on Macleod Trail.

It happened just after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday near 18th Avenue S.E.

Police say a 2000 BMW 323I was travelling northbound when it left the west side of the roadway striking a fence, a light standard and two large trees before coming to rest on its roof.

The vehicle briefly caught fire which was extinguished by the Calgary Fire Department.

The driver, identified as Saloman Cardona-Gallego, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre with serious, life-threatening injuries.

He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

A passenger was taken to hospital as well, but has since been released.

Investigators say they believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

Northbound Macleod Trail was closed from 25 Avenue to 18 Avenue while the Traffic Section investigated. It was reopened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.
