Police catch Deerfoot Trail speeders in weekend crackdown

CALGARY – Calgary police nabbed over 50 speeders in a crackdown targeting lead-footed drivers on Deerfoot Trail this weekend.

Officers set up in the 6400 block of Deerfoot Trail N.E. for three hours on Sunday.

Police ticketed a total of 51 people who were going faster than the 100km/h speed limit, and issued 60 summonses.

Police say speeding on Deerfoot Trail is a big concern, because it contributes to collisions which can prove fatal.

“Whenever you’re speeding, you reduce the amount of time that you have to react to anything else that is going on,” says S/Sgt. Paul Stacey. “You often see collisions when you have traffic flow going at a certain speed, and you have one or two vehicles that are exceeding that by a great deal.”

“People can’t react,” adds Stacey. “They don’t expect it to happen.”
