A giant panda gave birth to a pair of cubs, male and female, on Wednesday at a wildlife center in northwest China’s Shannxi Province.
Yang Yang delivered the female at around 08:30 and her brother half an hour later at the Shaanxi Rare Wild Animals Rescue, Breeding and Research Center, said staff of the center on Friday.
They are the world’s first pair of twin cubs born this year.
According to the center, Yang Yang had the twins through artificial insemination.
Staff members at the center will help them defecate until they get through one-month critical stage, the center said.
“The mother can only raise one cub if living in the wild. With human assistance, she can breed one and we the other. We will switch them once every two or three hours so as to ensure that both can receive care from the mother and avoid dying of inadequate milk,” said Jin Xuelin, deputy director of the center.
Five giant pandas have been born since last July in the center which will do more research on how to make giant pandas mate and reproduce on their own.
