CALGARY – Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano and teammate Sean Monahan are among those who will be marching in Toronto’s annual Pride Parade this weekend.
They will join dozens of other professional athletes on Sunday as Toronto celebrates 34 years of Pride, and also hosts World Pride.
Giordano and Monahan’s participation in the event comes in support of the ‘You Can Play’ project, which aims to make locker rooms and sports venues free from homophobia.
Calgary Flames’ President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke is on the organization’s advisory board, and his son Patrick is the co-founder. Both share a special connection to the cause, after suffering through the devastating loss of Brian’s other son Brendan, who died in a car crash shortly after coming out.

Organizers expect the Word Pride Parade to be the largest LGBTQ gathering of its kind in Canadian History.
In addition to representatives from several professional sports teams, organizers say more than 20 Canadian Olympians will also be participating in the parade.
