Police chase suspects in canoe

TORONTO – Ohio police arrested two men following a police chase in a canoe Sunday.

According to WHIO News, police responded to a call on Little Miami River after witnesses saw Joshua Dehart allegedly assault his wife while canoeing down the river.

Dehart was with his family and a group of friends when the alleged assault occurred. His wife and kids reportedly abandoned the canoe and joined a friend, Joe Drazek, in a second boat.

Police officers arrived on scene and waited down the river for Drazek to paddle by but he allegedly refused to come ashore.

“They took their gear off, one jumped in [the river],” witness Solomon Mulligan told CBS.

Meanwhile, Drazek was paddling down the river with the suspect’s wife and kids.

Police managed to get the woman and children out of their canoe but Drazek allegedly refused.

“The guy raised his paddle like he was going to hit the cops,” Mulligan said.

Officers swam after Drazek and was eventually arrested.

“Normally you think of police on the road, chasing down people in cars. I mean you’re not sitting there thinking oh yeah, a cop might jump in a canoe and paddle downstream to get somebody,” Mulligan said.
