Man suffering gunshot wound found near scene of rural break-in

CALGARY – Police are investigating if a man found suffering from a gunshot wound on Wednesday morning has any connection to a break-in near Balzac.

Investigators say a truck was stolen from a piece of rural property by the Calgary city limits during an early morning break-in around 2 a.m.

Shortly after, RCMP discovered a 34-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was inside a truck not far from the scene of the break-in, which investigators believe he stole from a Calgary home shortly after being shot.

The man who discovered the shooting victim says he drove the truck onto his lawn, saying he needed help.

A homeowner who lives in the area said the truck was taken from his cousin’s home, and that he rents out the home where it ended up.

“About 2 a.m. I got a phone call from one of the tenants, saying there was a gentleman in the truck draped over the steering wheel,” said Chris Minhinnett. “He had been shot and needed help.”

The suspect was rushed to the Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.

Police say he isn’t cooperating with them.

Officers conducted a search of the property where the break-in occurred, but it appears the owner wasn’t home at the time of the search.
