TORONTO – Christine Elliott will announce her intention to replace Tim Hudak and lead the Progressive Conservatives at a press conference Wednesday.
The PC MPP has held Whitby-Oshawa (previously Whitby-Ajax) by substantial margins of victory since 2006, when her late husband, former finance minister Jim Flaherty, jumped from provincial to federal politics. She held the riding during the June 12 election with 40 per cent of the vote defeating Liberal Ajay Krishnan by over 5,000 votes.
A prominent lawyer, Elliott has also made a name for herself as advocate for people with disabilities.
Elliott, who came third in the PCs’ last leadership race in 2009, was Hudak’s deputy leader and is the first MPP to declare her intention to replace Hudak since he stepped down following the June 12 election, although there is a movement afoot to draft federal Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt.
