TORONTO — Comedy sequels Think Like a Man Too, 22 Jump Street and How To Train Your Dragon 2 battled it out at the weekend office — and Think Like a Man Too only barely came out on top.
Think Like a Man Too, starring Kevin Hart, opened to $30 million, according to studio estimates.
That’s down slightly from the opening haul for the 2012 original but enough to beat 22 Jump Street, which earned $29 million in its second weekend.
How to Train Your Dragon 2, directed by Canada’s Dean DeBlois and starring the voice of Canada’s Jay Baruchel, made $25.3 million in its second weekend and ranked third.
Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of the stage musical Jersey Boys, which opened to poor reviews, came in fourth with only $13.5 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie ($13 million) and the Tom Cruise sci-fi spectacle Edge of Tomorrow ($10.3 million).
Maleficent has made $522 million worldwide since coming out at the end of May and Edge of Tomorrow has made $293 million worldwide in its first three weeks.
The made-in-Montreal X-Men: Days of Future Past added $6.2 million on the weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $692 million; and B.C.-shot Godzilla topped $477 million globally by earning another $1.8 million.
