MONTREAL – Over the last two weeks, Pauline Volikakis has relived a nightmare. She’s sat in court looking at countless accident scene photos – remembering the worst day of her life.
“All the pictures that are in my head are coming back to me,” Volikakis told Global News in an exclusive interview. “It’s very, very hard.”
Volikakis is the mother of 16-year-old Jessie Roy and the wife of 50-year-old Andre Roy. The father and daughter were killed in a dramatic highway crash almost four years ago in Candiac.
Their motorcycle slammed into the vehicle of then 21-year-old Emma Czornobaj.
During her two-week trial at the Montreal Courthouse, court heard the woman stopped her car on the left lane of the highway in order to help some ducks.
Czornobaj is facing four charges: two counts of criminal negligence causing death, and two counts of dangerous driving causing death.
A jury in Montreal is currently deciding the fate of the now 25-year-old. If convicted, she faces years in prison.
Surprisingly, Volikakis holds no bad blood or hatred to the young driver.
“We have to go on with our lives now, that’s where we’re at, going on,” Volikakis said.
The widow also had some advice for young drivers: never stop on highways.
“It’s not the place to stop,” Volikakis said. “It’s dangerous!”
The 10-man, 2-woman jury panel resumes its deliberation work Wednesday morning.
