EDMONTON – MLA Rachel Notley is expected to make an announcement about her future with Alberta’s New Democrat Party on Monday.

Notley will be holding announcements in both Calgary and Edmonton.

She has been the MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona since 2008.

Her father, Grant Notley served as an Alberta MLA from 1971 to 1984 and was also NDP leader for 16 years.

NDP MLA David Eggen filed his nomination papers to enter the leadership race on Friday morning.

Brian Mason announced he would be stepping down as leader of the party in April, saying it was time for a fresh face to lead and capture more supporters.

“The party is ready for prime time and I just think it needs a different leader to get it to the next level,” the five-term Edmonton MLA said in April.

“We need to … go beyond our traditional supporters so that there is a strong and very effective group of MLAs in the next legislature, after the next election, that will stand up to the Wildrose and possibly to the PCs as well.”

Mason has said he will resign as head of the party effective Oct. 19. That same weekend party faithful will meet to pick a new leader.
