EDMONTON – Alberta has recorded its first tornado of the year, after a funnel cloud briefly touched down Friday evening.
Environment Canada confirms two funnel clouds were observed around 7:15 p.m., about 15 kilometres northwest of Gleichen – a hamlet located 94 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
According to Environment Canada, one of the funnel clouds briefly touched down.

Environment Canada describes it a landspout tornado, which is “generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.” Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but can still be dangerous.
There were no reports of any damage.
