Deadly crash closes part of QEII north of Calgary

CALGARY- A terrible crash between a pickup truck and a semi has left one person dead.

It happened on the QEII between Carstairs and Didsbury around 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. RCMP believe the semi was making a left turn onto Township Road 310, when it was rear-ended by the Ford truck.

Neither weather or road conditions are believed to be factors.

EMS confirms that a man in his late 20s died at the scene. A blue tarp could be seen covering part of the wrecked pickup truck.

“It was a very catastrophic collision,” says Sgt. Doug Wasylenki from RCMP.  “My understanding is that it was an instant fatality.”

“Everything shattered,” adds witness Paul Bhullar. “The wheel was flying, it happened so quick.”

He was driving behind both trucks, when the semi pulled over to turn.

“He was moved to the shoulder, and I saw him. I’m thinking in my mind, ‘why are you still moving? The semi truck is parked right there’ and then all of a sudden, boom! He just hit it way too hard.”

The semi driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, and has since been released.

As a result of the crash, northbound traffic was detoured, while southbound traffic slowed to a crawl.
