CALGARY – Officials say a young girl convinced her grandmother to leave a condo that had caught fire in Penbrooke Meadows on Tuesday, instead of battling the flames.

The fire broke out in a complex in the 5400 block of Pensacola Crescent N.E. just after 7:00 p.m.

When they arrived, firefighters found a small fire inside a basement unit, which was empty at the time.

The Calgary Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish the flames.

They say a young girl and her grandmother were inside the unit when they noticed the fire and were going to attempt to fight it, but the girl persuaded her grandmother to exit and call for help instead.

Both left the home uninjured.

The fire caused minimal structural damage but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home.
