TORONTO – Hamilton police announced Wednesday they have arrested a man accused of stealing a Ride to Conquer Cancer donation box over the weekend.
Brian Ross Peebles, 52, of Mississauga was apprehended on Tuesday without incident at a downtown hotel along with a female companion.
He has been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5000.
The charity box, which contained approximately $11,000, was stolen on Saturday during a Ride to Conquer Cancer banquet dinner at Hamilton’s Sheraton Hotel at 116 King Street.
Supporters paid an admission fee as well as donated to the fundraiser.
Police say “a portion” of the stolen funds were recovered following the suspect’s arrest.
Peebles has been denied bail.
