SASKATOON – There was big news on the first day of training camp concerning Geroy Simon’s future with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Number 81 took to the field at Griffiths Stadium on Sunday but it wasn’t Geroy Simon.
Import receiver Chaz Schilens was sporting Simon’s old number as it is now confirmed that Geroy is set to retire.
According to Riders general manager Brendan Taman, Simon’s decision to retire had little to do with money.
“We’ve talked for the last couple of months and we agreed at some point last week that he wouldn’t be back with us,” said Taman.

“We’re working through some things on how we’re going to transition him outside of football. We haven’t finalized that, but his career is finished.”
Simon is the Canadian Football League’s all-time receiving yards leader.
Last year, he was an integral part of the 101st Grey Cup championship team.
