Man survives five days in bush near Courtenay

COURTENAY, B.C. – A Vancouver Island man who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and dementia has been found after a five day ordeal.

Searchers spotted 65-year-old Jamie Sproule late Tuesday afternoon in bush near Comox Lake, not far from his Cumberland home, just south of Courtenay.

The chief of the Cumberland volunteer fire department, Mike Williams, says he is amazed Sproule survived in the woods, alone and without medication.

The rescue came almost a day after the official search for Sproule had been called off, but friends and others continued to check the bush around his home.

Sproule was in fair shape when he was found, although he was suffering from severe dehydration.

He is now being treated in a Comox hospital. (CFAX)
