DNA confirms bear in northern Alberta attack

EDMONTON – Alberta Fish and Wildlife has confirmed that the bear responsible for the death of a woman near Fort McMurray has been put down.

Lorna Weafer was working at a Suncor plant in the oil sands north of Fort McMurray earlier this month when she was mauled to death by a black bear.

A bear was captured and killed shortly after the incident, and there is now DNA confirmation that the animal destroyed was the correct one.

Another bear thought to be responsible for the death was also captured, but has now been released into the wild.

A group of colleagues tried to save the 36 year old, but were unsuccessful.

Weafer was an instrument tech with Suncor.

She is remembered by family and friends as a kind, compassionate woman, who lived life to the fullest.
