TORONTO — Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian Coast Guard ended their search on Lake Ontario Friday night for a boater who was reported missing Thursday.
John Supple of Lewiston, New York set out on the lake from Wilson Tuscarora State Park aboard a 16-foot camouflage pleasure craft and did not return.
Rescue crews from both sides of the border conducted a search of 5,000 square miles.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends,” said U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Joseph Higgins, Coast Guard Sector Buffalo deputy commander, in a statement.
“The decision to suspend a search takes extreme consideration and is one of the most difficult decisions a Coast Guardsman is ever faced with.”
Supple, 60, was last seen in his boat between 2 and 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
