Watch above: crash claims two lives over the noon hour in Saskatoon
SASKATOON – A fatal crash Thursday has renewed calls for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection of Highway 16 and Marquis Drive just outside of Saskatoon.
Around noon hour, an eastbound vehicle on Highway 16 struck a southbound car on Marquis Drive that had entered the intersection.
Two men, 22 and 24, were declared dead at the scene. Their names are not being released.
Two men, 20 and 28, and an 87-year-old woman were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Officials with the City of Saskatoon said they have been very concerned about safety at the intersection but has not been able to install traffic lights as it is just outside city limits and is under the jurisdiction of the department of highways and infrastructure.
That is about to change.
City official said they have been in discussion with the province and an agreement in principle was reached this week to allow the city to take over operational jurisdiction of the intersection.
Once the agreement is finalized, the city plans to install traffic lights later this year.
