MALAKWA — A salvage contractor is in some hot water after causing a structure fire at an abandoned mill in Malakwa — north-east of Sicamous.
The fire was reported early Wednesday evening — mostly spot fires.
Officials say the contractor was using torches to salvage metal from the structure and failed to take the necessary precautions including proper fireguards and didn’t have fire suppression equipment on site.
The contractor is now the subject of an investigation.
The McKinney shake mill shut down about 15 years ago.
