Fatal crash closes Glenmore Trail during Friday morning rush

CALGARY – A fatal two car crash on Friday morning forced the closure of part of Glenmore Trail.

Eastbound Glenmore Trail was shut down from 52 Street to Stoney Trail S.E., around 6 a.m.

Police say an SUV was travelling westbound on Glenmore Trail when the driver tried to onto southbound 68th Street S.E., but was t-boned by an eastbound SUV.

Both vehicles rolled into the ditch, and the westbound SUV caught on fire. The male driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, a man in his 50’s, was transported to hospital in stable, non life-threatening condition.

“There’s a lot of physical evidence that we find at the scene”, explains Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey. “Right now we have our Collision Reconstruction Unit on scene, and they’re gathering up all of that physical evidence. That will really tell us the story about what happened.”

Police don’t yet know if charges will be laid.

“No indication of alcohol [being involved] at this point,” explains Sgt. Stacey. “It looks like the primary cause of the collision was an unsafe left-hand turn by the SUV that was going westbound.”

Speed may also be a factor in the collision.
