120,000-square-foot indoor soccer field to be built in Garden City

WINNIPEG – Details about a much-anticipated major indoor soccer facility expansion were released Wednesday in Winnipeg.

The huge expansion of the Garden City Community Centre will focus on the indoor field that users will be able to split into four smaller fields. The project will also include a fully lit outdoor synthetic turf field.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The province of Manitoba will kick in $8.15 million for the facility, the city of Winnipeg will contribute $7 million and the Winnipeg Soccer Federation will put in $5.4 million.

Construction is scheduled to begin in fall and the facility is expected to be ready for the 2015 indoor soccer season. It will also be used as a training field for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, which Canada is hosting at facilities across the country.

The provincial funding for the soccer complex is money originally slated to be used to put a vinyl bubble over the Investors Group Field to allow winter use by soccer, football and ultimate players. That plan has been shelved in favour of the soccer facility.
